The Value of Wisdom - Proverbs 8, James 3:13-17

Tune in to Judge Judy on any day of the week and besides enjoying some great tv, you will see abundant evidence of the scarcity of wisdom in today's society.

It's not as if God keeps it all locked up in a safe somewhere - guarded by angels so no one can find it and dip into its treasures...He offers it freely to any who ask for it!

So then why is wisdom in such short supply these days?

Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and in today's "it's all about me" society, the fear of the Lord isn't all that popular. Few people seek wisdom because they prefer to live by their own brand of it.

The Bible has much to say about God's wisdom versus man's wisdom. Look at the comparison in the book of James 3:13-17

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct, that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy, and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

But the wisdom that is from above, is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

In these troubled times we need wisdom - God's wisdom - more than ever. And God's word promises that if we ask for wisdom, He will give it liberally (James 1:5). The search for wisdom should be the first priority of every person desiring to know God and especially for those already claiming to know Him. In fact, Proverbs 8 says that wisdom was God's first priority- even before creating the world!

Proverbs 8:22,23

The Lord brought me forth as the first of His works,
before His deeds of old;
I was appointed from eternity,
from the beginning, before the world began.

Think about this....If wisdom was God's first priority, even before He began creation- why do we seem to think we can function without it in this world of turmoil?
